My Target Freebies!

Sissy and I went to Target today to pick up a couple pairs of jeans for her. She has ripped the knees out of all her jeans except one and they have sequins on them. She needed jeans...you can only wear sequins so many times in a row....unless you are Liberace and then it's perfectly fine to wear sequins as many times a week as you want.

I, of course, organized my coupons and was able to pick up a number of things for super cheap. All these items were FREE! Good Saturday!

Friends, Food, and Fire

My friend, The Professor's Wife, (she has a blog but she hasn't really started it yet so I can't put a link up yet) invites us over all the time to play and knit. I always say I'm only going to stay a minute but she is from the south and her hospitality genes take over the minute I walk into the door and she keeps offering me food and drink. You know me...I can't resist food and drink. It's also REALLY warm in her house cause they have a wood stove, so, after eating my weight in chips, a coma usually comes over me and I get very, very sleepy. I think this is her plan.....so I'll stay and sit on her couch and knit the afternoon away.

This child is in on her plan too. He is amazing! He brings in armful after armful of wood and keeps the fire going. I think he has figured out if we are there visiting he doesn't have to do as much school work. I tell ya....he's a smart one!

See the food!? The girl-child is even in on this! She decorates it all pretty and who can resist a beautifully decorated cookie??The third child keeps Bubby busy. They play and scream and fight and play and scream and fight...see a pattern here? They also find a way to drag out EVERY toy in the house and bring it to the kitchen. The baby is real cute...but ya gotta watch him. He'll steal your cookies and not think a thing about it. This is were the food/heat coma starts to set in. The Professor's Wife puts on a movie and the kids can't move. They are glued to their seats and I have to pry them loose about 4pm so we can go home and I can load the dishwasher and look like I've done SOMETHING during the day. But ya know....I can think of worse ways to spend a very cold, windy, prairie day...eating soup, baking cookies, watching a movie and knitting with my friend.

Thanks dear friend. Hope your weekend is just as cozy.

My Walgreens Deals

I really wanted to go to Walgreens this week to pick up a couple of sale items but I didn't feel I could justify the 40 minute round trip for 4 products. But today The Hunter needed me to run over to the Rural King to pick up some parts for a wood stove we are putting in. Guess what....the Walgreens is RIGHT BESIDE Rural King! So, I snagged my coupon binder on the way out the door.

The trip was totally worth it!!

I scored all this for.....That is my actual receipt people!! I even paid full price for the chocolate chips cause I needed (NEEDED) them for tonight to make cookies. I love my Walgreens they are so helpful!! I almost got 10 cans of tuna but they were out and rain checked me.

I felt much better about having to drive all that way and not coming home with the part for the stove....they were out.

Making Valentine Brownies

Grandma came to visit and brought the makings of Valentine brownies instead of a bunch of useless candy. Brownie mix, pecans, and aprons. The kids got to wear their new aprons and practice cracking eggs. "You do it just like this Bubby.""This is how you pour in the pecans Sis."
Teamwork! (There is always teamwork and no fights when Grandma is around...why is that?) Pose for the obligatory Valentine photo holding all things Valentine. I have a feeling they think this is silly.

Snowmen and Scatology

The Saturday before Valentine's Day my parents drove up to visit and babysit the kids so The Hunter and I could go to the local SWCD's annual meeting. Jealous? You should be. I got fried chicken, mashed potatoes and a lesson on Scatology. Go ahead! Click on the link and look up what Scatology is...go ahead...I'll wait. (tick, tock, tick, tock) Yup! (Hoisting pants up like Barney Fife) Still jealous?? I knew you would be. (Sniff) We still had a little snow and it was perfect for making snow creations! It also wasn't that cold so that would explain why my kid is playing in the snow in her PJ's, no hat and not wearing a snowsuit. It has nothing to do with me being a lazy mother....nothing I tell ya!

My dad is known for his Snoopy snowmen. He doesn't make regular snowmen. He was teaching Sissy the finer points of Snoopy creations.
Sissy was so proud of their creation!
I preferred to take pictures from inside. Still...nothing to do with me being lazy I swear!

Pick a Petal Cards

I recently made these two cards using the Pick a Petal stamp set from Stampin' Up! I really love this stamp set and have used it a lot over the last couple of years. This first card I made in pink and brown colors for a friend who recently had a baby girl. This Pick a Petal card I made for my aunt who had sent me some wonderful presents in the mail.

The Hunter's Pancakes

The Hunter sure can make a mean pancake! Saturday I walked into the kitchen and was greeted by these wonderful, fluffy little pancakes.
I don't know how he gets them so fluffy....it's amazing! He said he used the recipe from the Better Crocker cookbook which I have used a million times and they always come out flat. I've tried every recipe and technique out there and nothing. Personally I think this is reason enough to stay in bed on the weekend and let HIM make ME pancakes...what do you think?

Your Life is Right Now

Your life is right now! It's not later! It's not in the time of retirement. It's not when your lover gets here. It's not when you've moved into the new house. It's not when you get the better job. Your life is right now. It will always be right now. You might as well decide to start enjoying your life right now, because it's not ever going to get better than right now--until it gets better right now! Abraham-Hicks

A friend of mine sent me this quote it could not be more right now for me. We have moved around a lot and we have a tendency to always say, 'In the next house we'll do this or that'. Well, not anymore. In the last couple of months I've come to the conclusion 'this is it!' If I don't do it now I won't ever do it.

So, I painted our bedroom a color I would never dream of doing...brown. I know...not all that dramatic to some but it was to me.
(This is my new headboard...a work in progress. More pictures to come next week.)

We have always wanted chickens but never did because we are in town or renting. We got chickens! I like my chickens. I like watching them and I like getting all those eggs everyday.
New project: My recipes are a mess! They are all in little bits of paper and ripped from magazine so I said after Christmas I was going to get my scrapbook/recipe album together. I've had this book for years and never opened it. You hold me to it....I'm going to get this done right now...soon!

I have recently found out 2 dear friends of our family passed away and I never knew! One I didn't know about till my annual Christmas card came back marked 'deceased' and the other person has been gone for almost 2 years before we found out he was gone! I feel horrible! Why didn't I go and visit?? Cause I was busy...busy doing what???

So...my little piece of advice to you....you have that friend or family member you haven't called, wrote to or visited in a long time. Do it! They might be gone soon.

You have that project you want to start but haven't cause it's too messy or too expensive. Get to working on it. You will be surprised how much fun it will be.

It's right now or never.

Sugar, Sugar, and more Sugar

Thanks to Hip2Save I was able to get 29 of these fabulous Valentine's Cards shipped to the house for FREE! They were easy and perfect. Sissy had fun decorating the outside of the envelopes with all my valentine stamps. We made our annual heart shaped cookies and then took them over for a little party at my friend Haley's. The kids had a lot of fun decorating cookies and playing together. There is nothing like taking 4 boys, adding a little sugar and then telling them to sit still for a picture. (Ignore the pumpkin...it really is Feb in these picture even though the decor and the kid's clothes suggest otherwise.)Girls are much easier to pose that's for sure. Hope you had a super Valentine's Day!

The Prairie Winds Are Driving Me CRAZY!

I have read stories all my life about the high winds of the plains and during the Great Depression and how they would blow for days and days and weeks and weeks and it would drive people crazy. I always thought 'yeah that would be annoying' but never thought much about it.

Women used to sit in their tiny little claim shanty's on the prairie with nothing but the 4 walls to look at (and 14 children). No running water, no dishwasher, no clothes washer or dryer, no microwave, no furnace and no Facebook (the horror!).....they would sloooowllllyyyyy go crazy. The wind would drive them crazy. The CONSTANT wind hitting the side of the house would finally get to them and they would go and drown someone in the well.

Well....now I understand it. The wind here NEVER LETS UP! The last 2 days it's been fairly high and when I'm in certain rooms of the house it's whistling sound is unnerving. I also have something not all prairie women had....this windmill a couple hundred yards from the house. When the wind is just right it rotates and it squeaks and moans and I swear it brays like a donkey. It's ridiculous!! I am luckier than the pioneer women though...I can go and turn up the radio or tv to distract myself so I can't hear this stupid thing going on and on and on all day and all night. And don't worry....my well is also covered.

Letter to Sunshine

Hello dear Sunshine....where have you been? I haven't seen you in what feels like ages! Your old friends Cloudy, Rainy and Foggy have been here for weeks. In fact they have camped out around my house and would not leave. I wasn't sure what I was going to do to encourage them to move on. It's nice that you brought snow with you again. It was rumored you were bringing 7-8 inches but you backed off at the last minute and only brought 3 inches at the most. I have noticed you are very creative with the snow here in the flat lands. Even when you do not bring very much you bring High Winds with you to help blow it around. Some areas have no snow and others have 2-3 feet of snow. Makes us feel important though. The Hunter is able to get out the snow blower and move the snow around a little. Thanks again for stopping by and feel free to stay on as long as you want.

Sincerely,

Flipfloppingmamma

Who needs sin in a bottle?!

Today in the mail I received THREE coupons for FREE packages of Oreos. THREE FREE PACKAGES of double stuff Oreos people!! Yeah yeah yeah I know they are horrible for me but they are SO GOOD. It's been YEARS since I've had an Oreo...except for those I snitched at my friend Haley's the other day when she wasn't looking....but those don't count cause nobody saw them.
I'm way too excited about this I know but I can't help it. I'm trying not to think about how 5 of these cookies most likely equals one of my beloved McD's Cokes. Oh well...they will soon be gone!

The Young Housekeeper's Friend, Part II

I've been reading more of The Young Housekeeper's Friend and according to Mrs. Cornelius I should 'accustom myself, each evening, to arrange in my own mind the meals for the next day, and also the extra work to be done by others, and what I will do myself.' Others??? I have others who will do work? I must find these others. If by Others she means The Others from Lost then I have a problem with this.

But if she means Others as in a staff of people to do my bidding then I am ok with this. Speaking of The Others....have you watched Lost this week? I just got caught up last night and now there is a NEW group of Others? Where have they been all this time? Where was this temple? All I have to say is if everything isn't totally resolved at the end of the season I am going to hurt someone! Anyway.....like I was saying....

Mrs. Cornelius says I am to 'visit all the rooms and closets that are in constant use, every day. You will thus acquire that habit of attention to minutiae, upon which neatness and order so much depend, and it will cost a less expenditure of time and effort to secure these ends, than if a great many little things requiring attention are suffered to accumulate. This habit will also have the best effect upon those who serve you.'

First of all...are there rooms in your home you don't use?? I think I do visit all of my rooms everyday. Except maybe the upstairs spare room. Which I can see her point. I had not been up there for a few days and yesterday I discovered all the sheets and bedding pulled off the bed and made into a tent....hmmmm....wonder who did that?

Second...'those who serve you'?? Again, where are those that serve me? Maybe they are hiding in a room I don't use.

This is where Mrs. Cornelius goes on to talk about your domestic staff. This is such a foreign topic to me that I am fascinated by it. I know that even in 2010 there are people with full-time domestic staff but I don't know any of them. I don't regularly hang out with people with domestic staff. Maybe that is because I AM the domestic staff.

When a new domestic enters our service, observe whether she seems to understand her business; if not, teach her your methods. Refrain from severity and too much frequency in finding fault, and be careful not to speak to domestics of their errors at a time when they are perplexed or very busy. If the dinner is not properly done, it is usually best to say nothing at the time; your cook will doubtless be conscious of her failure, and your silence will have a much better effect upon her than anything you can then say; but the next time....remind her of the previous failure, point out the defect, and give her minute instructions how to avoid it's repetition.

That's what everyone wants I'm sure....let the cook do dinner wrong TWICE before you tell her of the problem. Bring up her mistakes at a later date when it's all over and done with.

You need not, you must not, if you regard the best welfare of your household, utter one impatient word from the beginning to the end of the year.

Wow...I'm going to have to work on this. Apparently the welfare of my household depends on me being patient.

An Architect Maybe??

Every mother dreams that one day their child will grow up and get a good education and job. I'm thinking architect??? Everyday...and I mean EVERYDAY Bubby builds these elaborate tv viewing centers. He finds thing all over the house and instead of actually PLAYING with them he stacks them up and then drapes all the blankets in the house over, under or around the precariously placed furniture.
I'm praying this is cause he is REALLY smart and likes to built things and not that he likes to spend time behind bars and in small places.

Happy Groundhog Day!

The little rodent saw it's shadow...big shocker there! Today at Bubby's preschool they were learning all about groundhogs. What they eat, where they live...stuff like that. Bubby's teacher told me after class that while all the kids were coloring their pictures this conversation was going on:

Bubby: "My Daddy shoot that groundhog!"
Teacher: "He did?"
Bubby: "Yup! He was HUGE and my daddy shoot him!"
Little girl in class: "This groundhog right here? This groundhog we are coloring right now? He shoot him??"
Teacher: "No not this one I'm sure it was another one."
Bubby: "Sure was! My Daddy SHOOT HIM!"

Wait till he tells them how Daddy shot the Easter Bunny.
