Songbird Notecard Portfolio

Last week was my dear friend, Haley's, birthday.  I made her an envelope of note cards using my new Songbird Cricut cartridge.

I can't tell you how much I love this little Cricut cartridge!!  I used a regular 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of card stock. I scored the paper 2 1/2 inches along the bottom and 5 1/2 inches down the middle.  The notecards I cut to fit inside the envelope.

Happy Birthday Haley!!

Things that should be on a T-shirt

Apparently I am just a gatherer/worker bee and you are a key-note speaker bee.

Gift Card Holder

We have a family reunion this weekend...which I'm in charge of.   Every year we have an auction during the reunion of items the family has donated.  The items can be used or new...sentimental or funny.   We use the money to purchase items for the next reunion....plates, cups, food and give aways.

I've decided to have a little family trivia game and I'm going to give away gift cards from area businesses.  I decided today that I can't just hand someone a naked gift card....that's just a ridiculous idea.  These gift cards need a pretty envelope to go in!

This week I was at Archiver's and made my friend Meagan buy this super cute envelope template for $1.99 but don't worry she got me back.  She twisted my arm and made me buy a new Cricut cartridge called Songbird for $2.99....hey my hubby reads this and it cost $2.99 got it?  That's our story...we gotta stick together on this people.

I used the template for the envelope and made the money sign using the Songbird cartridge.    I think these are super cute and I'm sure nobody will ever notice I made them...but I think they are fun and I liked making them.

Phone Conversation of the Day

I was talking to my sister on the phone this morning and I said I needed to get off the phone and do something productive today.  I've been on this computer far too long this morning. I should be picking apples.  I should be cleaning.  She tells me......

Life is short.  The universe if big.  Do what you want.

I was silent for a moment and said, "Wow...that's a quote for the blog."  Then she says to go to hubblesite.org and check out their photos of the universe and you will see exactly how small you are and how it doesn't really matter if you ate a donut yesterday (which I didn't and she obviously did).

Does it REALLY matter if I don't clean today?

Berry-Yogurt Pops

My kids love popsicles like just about every other kid out there.  I've looked all over for popsicle molds and I can't find them anywhere!!  And before you send me emails telling me you found a fabulous set let me tell you I've looked.  I could buy online I know but I have this thing for buying 4 little plastic cups for an outrageous price.  It dawned on me one day that I have all these little juice glasses I have collected over the years and they would be perfect to make popsicles in.

Place 1 1/2 cups sliced strawberries in blender, add 1/3 cup cool simple syrup, and puree until smooth. For simple syrup, combine 1/2 cup sugar and 1/2 cup water in a saucepan; bring to a boil, stirring until sugar dissolves.  Cool.

Pour a couple of tablespoons strawberry puree into each mold or glass.  Place glass in freezer for 30 minutes.  At this point you may not want to tell the kids you are making these cause they will bug you ALL day wanting to know when they are done.

Remove from freezer and add a couple tablespoons vanilla yogurt on top of strawberry layer.

Return to freezer while you prepare the next layer.

Bubby helped me add the popsicle sticks at this point but if I did it again I would wait till after the 3rd layer is in the glass.  But you can do what you want.

Puree 1 1/2 cups of raspberries or blackberries...whatever you have on hand....with remaining simple syrup until smooth.  You can strain your berries through a fine mesh sieve if you want but I didn't.  You know me....everything is done about half-ass.

This is why I would wait to add the sticks.  When you go to pour the 3rd layer into the glass it's hard not to cover the stick with the sticky berry mixture.  Not very pretty.

Let the popsicle freeze for a couple of hours or overnight.  This is why I won't tell the kids I'm making these cause it took forever to freeze and they asked if they were ready about every 10 minutes.  Once frozen run them under hot water and they should pull out of the glass super easy.

We all loved these!!  Some of my glasses were a bit large I think.  When I make them again I won't feel the need to fill up the entire glass.  Smaller popsicles are easier to eat.  These were super yummy and easy to make!!  Enjoy!!

And She's Off!

First day of school 2010.  She couldn't wait to carry her new school bag.  She's been walking by it for 2 weeks now so excited she can hardly stand it.  It wasn't MY first choice but I broke down and got it for her anyway.  She said, "Mom....people will have to stop and stare at it because it's so fabulous".

I still have Bubby for a couple more weeks.  His school doesn't start till after Labor Day.  So, we will do today what we usually do on a Tuesday morning....head to the gym, then the library and then I have to mow the yard.  Won't be anything exciting on our end but Sissy will have a fabulous day I'm sure.

What will they remember about summer?

Best summer afternoon EVER.

Expensive play sets are not needed.

Expensive toys are not needed.

They won't remember that it was 100 degrees this day.

They will only remember they had a ton of fun on a summer afternoon.

I will remember watching them play all afternoon without fighting.

I will remember their squeals of joy.

And all the laundry....lots and lots of laundry.

Best Text Message of the Day

My sister:  It's going to be 112 degrees today.  It's like a movie and Jake Gyllenhal is gonna have to come and save us all.

Me:  You better tell Jake to bring along Russell Crowe cause he might need help saving us all.

My sister:  In that case we better call in Johnny and Gerry and get the whole gang in on it.

Me:  Yeah wouldn't want anyone to feel left out.

Happy Friday

I have been gone most of the week visiting friends up north.  So wonderful to see everyone.  Thanks to the power of Facebook but really don't even feel like I've been gone for a year.  Today I am back home and back to real life....and REAL heat and humidity.  Not looking forward to mowing the yard this morning but it has to be done.  Enjoy your weekend!

The Finale--Their own private ocean

While on our family vacation we stayed a couple nights with family.  They live in a beautiful neighborhood on an inlet of the Chesapeake Bay.

There were very few people at their little beach and the kids had a great time. They thought they were swimming in the REAL ocean and we didn't really try and explain it to them.

They loved showing off their mad jumping skills.

After much driving, sightseeing and visiting we finally made it back home to a yard that needed bailed and a garden that was threatening to take over.  It was good to be back home though.

Speed Bump Ahead

This sign was in my in-laws neighborhood.  Apparently in the East this means speed bump ahead.  We found it very humorous.  For everyone who knows what the road to my house looks like then you will know a tiny little speed bump did NOT slow us down.

Family Vacation, Part V--Smithsonian

I kinda just left you hanging about my family vacation didn't I??  The suspense is probably killing you isn't it?  You are wondering...what is next?  Where did they go next?  Well, wait no more.  The second day in DC we went to the museums and tried to stay indoors more.  I'm glad we did Arlington the first day even though it was ridiculously hot cause it rained most of the week.

The kids enjoyed the museums a lot more than the cemetery and the monument tours...can't understand why.

We visited the Air & Space Museum and the American History Museum.  They had a replica of a air craft carrier and to my amazement I realized it was a replica of the air craft carrier my dad had been on 40 years ago, the USS Bon Homme Richard.  What are the odds??

There is so much to see at the Smithsonian.  I could spend months looking at everything and still not see it all.  I could have looked at the section on the First Ladies for days.  We were able to see many of the First Lady's Inaugural ball gowns including Michelle Obama's.

The section on pop culture was so much fun!  Julia Child's kitchen!  How cool is that?

Dorothy's Ruby Red Slippers!

The kids were such troopers.  After we left the animal section they were pretty much done.  Poor Bubby....he was so done walking.

Someday we will hopefully be able to go back and see more.  I would recommend Spring or Fall...when it's not crazy hot.

Midweek update

Updates:  10 gallons of tomatoes makes 38 quarts of tomatoes.  I think I'm done with canning tomatoes.  I do want to make a bit more salsa though.  Can never have too much of that.

I'm sitting here waiting for FedEx to arrive and deliver my new laptop.  I'm VERY excited!!  Can you tell?   With a new laptop I will never have to step into this office again which means I don't have to clean it right??  That's my theory.

Summer's Bounty

We interrupt the summer fun for tomatoes

If you are counting that is 10 gallons of tomatoes on my kitchen table.  That's a lot of chips and salsa!!
